Press Release Green Strategy Marine Propulsion System

MITSUI E&S Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Takeyuki Takahashi; hereinafter "MITSUI E&S") announced that in collaboration with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.(Tokyo Head Office:Minato-ku, Tokyo; President:Yasuhiko Hashimoto), a shipbuilder of ammonia fueled LPG/ammonia carrier, it has been granted Approval in Principle (AiP) from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) for a LPG/ammonia carrier that can use liquid ammonia as the ship’s fuel.

Ammonia is a green fuel that emits no CO2 when combusted, and is attracting interest as an alternative fuel at a time when the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is strengthening restrictions on gas emissions from ships. MITSUI E&S participated in the HAZID risk assessment meeting as a supplier of ammonia dual fuel engines and ammonia fuel supply systems to study necessary countermeasures for safety evaluation. The AiP has been granted for the confirmed design safety of the carrier to be compliant with ClassNK criteria.

As a leading company in marine propulsion systems, MITSUI E&S has set "the realization of a decarbonized society" as one of its materiality themes related to solutions to social issues. MITSUI E&S contributes to the realization of a sustainable carbon-neutral society in the field of maritime logistics through the provision of systems including Ammonia dual fuel engine and peripheral equipment.
