Inspection Vehicle for Tunnel Lining

Until recently, tunnel soundness diagnostics of Shinkansen (bullet train) was carried out by a hammering test. In order to enhance the accuracy of the diagnostics, Mitsui has newly developed a Tunnel Lining Inspection Vehicle (pet name "Click") together with JR East, which detects the inside of concrete lining by a multi-pass radar system, achieving dramatic level up of safety management owning to the newly obtained detail diagnosis which was never possible by conventional test methods.

Disaster Monitoring Robot

Mitsui has developed a Disaster Monitoring Robot (nickname "Moni-Robo") which works instead of human being at an emergency site and/or an area where people cannot approach including nuclear facility. The operator controls the Moni-Robo from a remote and safe place to make picture taking, measurement of radio activity, running and manipulation to collect the information at around the disaster area. The Moni-Robo has achieved a prompter, safer and more accurate collection of information than before.

Underwater Robot for Water Pipe Inspection

Inspection of main water pipe was a difficult job before because it inevitably caused a cut of water supply in a wide area. To cope with such difficulty, Mitsui has developed an Under-water Robot for Inspection of Water Pipe to be used in the water pipe, which has diameter of only 8 cm and can carry out inspection in the water pipe without cutting of water supply. This inspection robot is so small that can be inserted into the water pipe through an air vent valve at the manhole (inspection hole). Pictures of pipe's inside taken by the camera installed on the top and the side are displayed on the monitor on the ground through underwater cable. Wider use of this super-mini robot is expected to tackle the deterioration of water pipe more than before.

Non-destructive Testing System

Mitsui is taking a leadership in non-destructive testing system to check the inside concrete and/or reinforcement steel of buildings. Mitsui's Non-destructive Testing System, couples with a combination of multiple transmission and receiving antennas, displays the inside condition of concrete in three dimensions on the screen by analyzing the reflected wave which passes through the concrete and reflects off the reinforcement steel and/or vacancy.

This technology has greatly contributed to the sound assessment of the building and to the enhancement of safety administration.
