“Plan to Increase Production Capacity of Ammonia-Fueled Propulsion System” is selected under “Zero Emission Ship Construction Promotion Project”
MITSUI E&S Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Takeyuki Takahashi; hereinafter "MITSUI E&S") is pleased to announce that its “Plan to Increase Production Capacity of Ammonia-Fueled Propulsion Systems” is selected as one of the subsidized projects under the Ministry of the Environment’s and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s public “Zero Emission Ship Construction Promotion Project” on August 21, 2025.
This project aims to lead the global effort in reducing CO₂ emissions by establishing a domestic production system for zero-emission ships and accelerating their market adoption, thereby strengthening industrial competitiveness and driving economic growth.
As greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction in the maritime sector is becoming a pressing issue, MITSUI E&S has produced low environmental impact products such as LNG, LPG, methanol fueled engines which are ready for future net-zero GHG emission fuels and furthermore, by utilizing this subsidy program, will accelerate the production of ammonia fueled products, engine and fuel supply system. MITSUI E&S aims to increase its production capacity of dual fuel engines by 10 times by 2040, mainly ammonia fueled engine which is zero GHG emission solution and achieve IMO’s target “Net-zero GHG emissions from international shipping by or around, i.e. close to 2050” as early as possible.
Japan’s marine industry aims to double shipbuilding capacity by 2035.
By investing in production facilities for ammonia fueled propulsion systems in addition to leveraging its strengths such as manufacturing capacities, MITSUI E&S will be committed to expanding the global share of ships built in Japan and to the growth of shipping industry and will aim to achieve a global market share of 20% over for ammonia fueled propulsion systems and even top share of the world.
