We provide energy-saving equipment and technologies that reduce operating costs.

VCR

The VCR (Variable Compression Ratio System) mechanism enables the engine to operate at an optimised compression ratio according to output and fuel type. This improves fuel efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions. Developed by Mitsui E&S DU in collaboration with the licensor WinGD, the VCR mechanism will help to create a decarbonised society in a variety of situations.

EcoEGR

EcoEGR is a technology that improves fuel consumption and reduces NOx emissions at the same time. This is achieved by optimizing engine tuning to prioritize fuel consumption, and then operating EGR in all Tier II and Tier III waters.
In conventional engine tuning, there was a trade-off between fuel efficiency (SFOC) and NOx emissions. This solves this problem and contributes greatly to improving EEDI. EcoEGR can also be used in dual fuel engines (excluding ME-GIE and ME-LGIP engines).

THS2 (Waste heat recovery system)

MITSUI E&S's proprietary THS2 (Turbo Hydraulic System) recovers and uses excess the exhaust gas energy generated by the highly efficient turbocharger as hydraulic power, which is then used to assist engine rotation. Conversely, during low load operation, the turbocharger rotation is supported by hydraulic power from the crankshaft. This reduces fuel consumption by up to 2% and improves EEDI. Compared to conventional waste heat recovery systems, it is extremely compact and does not require major changes to the engine room design.

Shaft Generator

The shaft generator is added to the Fore end of the crankshaft of the main engine, and uses the crankshaft's power to generate electricity. The main engine, which provides the ship's propulsion, is highly efficient and can use a variety of fuels, contributing to energy savings throughout the ship. The need to promote energy conservation is in creasing due to stricter IMO and other regulations, and shaft generators offer a variety of advantages, including the following:

  • EEDI improvements, compliance with stricter regulations
  • Reduction of OPEX costs by decreasing generation engine operation (maintenance, SCR urea)
  • Reduce crew workload
  • Effective use of main engine ahead of alternative fuel use
