Completion of the Contract for the Development of Technology Supporting Remote Automated RTG and Terminal Chassis

MITSUI E&S Co., Ltd. (President: Takeyuki Takahashi; Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; hereinafter "MITSUI E&S") was commissioned by the Ports and Harbors Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) to develop coordination technology between Rubber Tired Gantry Cranes (RTG※1) and terminal chassis※2 under the "Port Technology Development Program" over the two years from FY2023 to FY2024. MITSUI E&S is pleased to announce the successful completion of the technology development for container grounding support functions, enabling seamless coordination between RTGs and terminal chassis.

This technology consists of the following three key functions, which work together to enable container grounding support.

Through verification tests in an actual operation at a terminal, the container grounding support function successfully achieved container handling moves between RTG and terminal chassis equivalent to those of manual operations performed by experienced remote operators. As a result, even operators with less RTG operating experience can perform tasks within a certain timeframe.

MITSUI E&S has already developed and marketed RTGs capable of remote operation as part of our efforts to improve productivity and working conditions. To further enhance remote operability, we propose the coordination technology developed for terminal chassis as a solution that alleviates the workload of remote RTG operators and terminal chassis drivers while ensuring stable cargo-handling efficiency.
Furthermore, we will continue to advance technological development aimed at improving the efficiency of cargo-handling operations, contributing to the effective management of terminal operations.

※1 RTG (Rubber Tired Gantry Crane):
A type of crane equipped with legs that has tires on both ends, allowing it to move without the need for ground-installed rails.

※2 terminal chassis:
A specialized tractor head and trailer chassis used within container terminals for transporting containers between ship-to-shore crane and container yards.
